Use Autotranslate to quickly translate short pieces of text. Paste in some text and it will be translated to your phone's language. You don't need to know the language of the text beforehand, Autotranslate will tell you.
There is a 5000 character limit per request.
Autotranslate requires a working network connection so it can connect to Google Translate and request a machine translation of your text. It usually does a better job with properly punctuated formal writing such as newspaper articles than it does with informal writing such as instant messages. Machine translation is a challenging problem. The translation quality of some languages is still a little rough, but it will improve over time and the people at Google are continuously working on improving the quality of their translations. For more information see the Google Translate FAQ. Ad supported.
Typing in text for another language may require adding a special keyboard. To add a keyboard, open the settings app from the home screen, choose General > International > Keyboards and then turn on the keyboard you want. The next time you edit text you'll see that the keyboard has a new globe key which you can use to switch between languages.
